Alternative Translation -

Sunee Pukaari Daatar Prabhu Guru Naanak Jag Maahi Pathhaaiaa
The benefactor Lord listened to the cries (of humanity) and sent Guru Nanak to this world.

Charan Dhoi Raharaasi Kari Charanamritu Sikhaan Peelaaiaa
He washed His feet, eulogised God and got his Disciples drink the ambrosia of his feet.

Paarabrahamu Pooran Brahamu Kalijugi Andari Iku Dikhaaiaa
He preached in this darkage (kaliyug) that, saragun (Brahm) and nirgun (Parbrahm) are the same and identical.

Chaaray Pair Dharam Day Chaari Varani Iku Varanu Karaaiaa
Dharma was now established on its four feet and all the four castes (through fraternal feeling) were converted into one caste (of humanity).

Raanaa Ranku Baraabaree Pairee Paavanaa Jagi Varataaiaa
Equating the poor with the prince, he spread the etiquette of humbly touching the feet.

Ulataa Khaylu Piranm Daa Pairaa Upari Seesu Nivaaiaa
Inverse is the game of the beloved; he got the egotist high heads bowed to feet.

Kalijugu Baabay Taariaa Satinaamu Parhhi Mantr Sunaaiaa
Baba Nanak rescued this dark age (kaliyug) and recited ‘satinam’ mantr for one and all.

Kali Taarani Guru Naanaku Aaiaa ||23 ||
Guru Nanak came to redeem the kaliyug.

Guru Ramdas story is that of an unparalleled union, a royal union. One that was seen with Guru Nanak, Guru Angad and Guru Amardas. One that served all the lovers of Oneness. A union that was won by the spear of wisdom and protected by truth.  A union of all ages, past and future — under the tent pitched by the true guru. So, a union that is truly royal because it is timeless.

That is what is described in this shabad.  This is a shabad that was composed last week. I recorded the vocals live and then recorded some instruments for backing up. Enjoy!

He carries the spear of intuition, and takes the Support of Naam, the Name of the Lord, through which the devotees are fulfilled.

O Guru Raam Daas, You alone know the taste of this Raja Yoga. ||12||

Translation by Shivpreet Singh

Guru Ramdas!

I am celebrating a colorful Holi with this new shabad by Guru Arjan Dev in Raag Asa. Really a question answer with the soul bride ... How did you become so beautifully crimson, asks the seeker. The answer is shared by Guru Arjan at the end of the shabad. Share with you minds, hearts, souls, friends and family!

Happy Holi from California!

Translation by Bhai Manmohan Singh

The red gown looks beautiful on thy body.
When thou became pleasing to the Lord, then, is His heart bewitched.

What has given thee this red bloom?
Whose love has rendered thee tulip-crimsons. Pause.

Thou art beautiful and thou the happy wife.
In thy home is the beloved and in thy home is good fortune.

Thou art chaste and thou the most distinguished.
Thou art pleasing to thy beloved and thou possesseth superior understanding.

I am pleasing to my darling, therefore I have assumed tulip-red dye.
Say Nanak that the Lord has looked on me with a favouring glance.

Translation by Sant Singh Khalsa

That red dress looks so beautiful on your body.
Your Husband Lord is pleased, and His heart is enticed. ||1||

Whose handiwork is this red beauty of yours?
Whose love has rendered the poppy so red? ||1||Pause||

You are so beautiful; you are the happy soul-bride.
Your Beloved is in your home; good fortune is in your home. ||2||

You are pure and chaste, you are most distinguished.
You are pleasing to Your Beloved, and you have sublime understanding. ||3||

I am pleasing to my Beloved, and so I am imbued with the deep red color.
Says Nanak, I have been totally blessed with the Lord's Glance of Grace. ||4||

Translation

What makes you bloom in red?
Who's color of love has made you so crimson? [rahao]

Your red robe beautifies your body
It pleases your love, it entices the mind [1]

You are beautiful
You are soul's bride.
Your Beloved is in your home
good fortune is in your home. [2]

You are true, you are distinguished
You are pleasing to love, you hold divine wisdom

Meetha Meetha is on Spotify and iTunes as of yesterday. For many of the shabads that were just live practices, I had not added them to the distribution but folks have been asking me to put these shabads so they can have them on their playlists. So I'll try to add them routinely going forward. Thanks for the prodding! Your words appear sweet to me!

Introduction and Video - Kaise Man Tarega Re

This beautiful shabad was written by Bhagat Namdev, the saint poet from Maharashtra.  I continue to celebrate Bhagat Namdev's 750th birth anniversary by creating several media projects based on his poetry.  The odds were against him but despite Bhagat Namdev being from a family of cheepas, or calico printers, he was able to swim across the toxic ocean of life to meet Paarbrahm and describes his experience in this shabad. Guru Nanak found this shabad inspirational and sang it in a raag he created himself, Raag Asa, the raag of hope.

The link to the shabad video is below.  For an in depth discussion please see my blog: In Depth Discussion on Kaise Man Tarega Re.

Lyrics and Translation in English

Aasaa - Translation by Bhai Manmohan Singh

He, who sees the Supreme Lord, likes not other desires.
He thinks of Lord's devotional service and keeps his mind free from care.

O my soul, how shalt thou cross over the world-ocean filled with the water of vice?
Beholding the false worldly valuables thou has gone astray, O my mind. Pause.

Thou hast given me birth in a calico-printer's house (O Lord), but I have attained the Guru's instruction.
By saints' grace, Nam Dev has met his Lord.

Happy Spring! I have composed this shabad in Raag Basant as part of the Bhagat Namdev 750 project. There is a live recording and a studio recording; I just released two versions of the live recording: YouTube and Instagram. Below the recordings you will find the lyrics, meanings, translations as well as some related shabads and poems.

Here is Bhai Harjinder Singh's popular composition of the shabad:

Essence of the Shabad  - Teri Bhagat Na Chhodon

The shabad is a lesson in giving up.  It is about loving like the lotus: against all odds. Bhagat Namdev sings in Raag Basant, "I will not stop loving you even if people laugh at me. The one who leave their master in need, leave their honor. People love wealth and would even die for it. But the lovers of truth,  love your name and give up their own existence.  Bathing in the Ganges and Godavari is for the people of the world. For me, the service of hari is above all.  I will not stop loving you even if people laugh at me." Teri Bhagat Na Chhodon Bhave Log Hasai.

Reminds me of "Tyaagna Tyaagan Neeka, Kaam Krodh Lobh Moh Tyaagna"

Related Hindi Abhang and Guru Amar Das Shabad

Nov 2020: Today I was reading a Hindi abhang of Sant Namdev (Yaahi Govinda Charan - see below) and I found it similar to a shabad I have composed earlier: Teri Bhagat Na Chhodon (see below for lyrics, meaning and essence).  When I compared the two, they were very similar. One was in Raag Sorath, the other in Raag Basant.  I also found today a shabad by the Guru Amar Das (also in Raag basant - see end of this note) which uses very similar language.

Bhagat Namdev lived between 1270 and 1350 AD while Guru Amardas lived lived two hundred years later between 1479 and 1574 AD.  Guru Arjan Dev compiled the first Adi Granth in 1604 AD and Guru Gobind completed the final Guru Granth Sahib in 1708 AD.  There are other writings that I have discovered where Guru Nanak converses with Bhagat Namdev's through poetry.  Thanks to Guru Nanak bhagat Namdev's bani was saved in pristine form for generations to come.   It is amazing to find conversations happening between spiritual poets over centuries. Discovering these while encountering new poetry is one of my favorite pastimes. So many riddles to solve; so much joy to be had!

If the Lord were totally pleased, then He would let Naam Dayv be His servant. ||3||1||

Another one of my translations -

If the servant runs away when his master is in trouble,
He will not have a long life, and he brings shame to all his family. ||1||

I won't stop serving you even if people laugh at me.
The lotus feet abide within my heart. ||1||Pause||

Like the greedy man doesn't risk wealth for his own life
Saints do not forsake the Lord's Name for any reason. ||2||

Pilgrimages to the Ganges, the Gaya and the Godawari are merely worldly affairs.
If the Lord were totally pleased, then He would let Naam Dayv be His servant. ||3||1||
